OTTAWA – The federal government has partnered with 14 internet service providers, including Rogers, Cogeco, Shaw and Telus, to provide internet services at a cost of $20 per month to seniors receiving a maximum Guaranteed Income Supplement.
“Seniors depend on the Internet to stay in touch with loved ones and access vital services. Providing low-income seniors with affordable access to high-speed Internet service will make a tremendous difference in their everyday lives,” said seniors minister Kamal Khera on April 4.
Internet speeds are increased and monthly usage allotments have also increased from 100 GB to 200 GB through a second phase of the government’s Connecting Families initiative.
Those eligible for the plan will receive a letter from the federal government containing an access code to sign up through the Connecting Families online portal.
There are no equipment or installation fees and an existing $10 internet plan offered under the initial phase of Connecting Families remains available.
