‘When men were free’

Dear Editor:

In the words of Mark Twain “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.”

Regardless of your view on COVID, vaccines, etc. what happened in Ottawa should cause you to pause and reflect on the state of our nation.

This past week police forces descended on Ottawa with snipers, horses, pepper spray, guns, batons, and riot gear. One interesting item that they did not have was defensive equipment, shields, which would be necessary if dealing with violent protests but not necessary for breaking up a peaceful protest.

The videos and pictures flooding the internet show police striking protestors with rifles and wooden batons as well as pushing over seniors and injuring protestors while pushing their horses through crowds of Canadian citizens.

Citizens who were vilified for having opposing views to the current government.

In the words of Ronald Reagan, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it, and then hand it to them with the well-fought lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same.

“And if you and I don’t do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in the [Canada] when men were free.”
