School boards provide guidance as sports, extracurricular activities resume

WELLINGTON COUNTY – As schools resume extracurricular activities and sports, the Upper Grand District School Board and Wellington Catholic District School Board are providing additional guidance on health and safety requirements.

Health and physical education

In elementary and secondary schools’ health and physical education courses, the use of gymnasiums, swimming pools, change rooms, weight rooms, indoor physical education equipment and shared outdoor equipment are permitted with distancing.

Masking is not required when playing high or low contact activities outdoors. However, masking is required for indoor sports when not actively engaged in the activity.

Masks can be removed when actively participating in the activity if they cannot be worn safely while participating.

Windows should be opened when feasible to increase ventilation.

School swimming pools are permitted, with physical distancing around the pool area encouraged to avoid close contact.

Measures for inter-school sport activities should also follow the requirements in the health and physical education requirements for schools.

Board officials are reminding families that students participating in inter-school athletics must be fully vaccinated or participate in regular rapid antigen testing three times per week.

Clubs, sports, extracurricular activities

Clubs, sport teams, bands and extracurricular activities are permitted. Cohorts may interact outdoors with physical distancing encouraged, and indoors with masking and physical distancing.

Direction in sections on protective strategies and specific academic programs and requirements apply to all extracurricular activities.

Wind instruments and singing

As much distance as possible is encouraged and use of large, well-ventilated spaces. Masking is required when not actively engaged in the activity.

Proper sanitization of any shared wind instruments should occur between use. Students are also encouraged to have a minimum distance of two metres or more between individuals.

While singing, students are asked to wear a mask and maintain as much distancing as possible.

Elementary students are to remain within their cohort.
