Lionel Nijhuis of Orton, aged 85, passed away peacefully early Monday, January 3, 2022. He is survived by his wife Patricia; son Jason (wife Andrea) and daughter Sarah (husband Ramesh); grandchildren Rebecca, Logan and Isabella; siblings Terry, Patricia, Liola and Hank; brother-in-law Doug and his many nieces and nephews (Sean, Laura, Scott, Pam, Sue, Dieter, Damon, Aaislinn, Jennifer and Josh). Lionel made his living by trading stocks and bonds at Merrill Lynch Canada and he was a self-made man, starting in the mail room and working his way up to the Vice President Director position. Many friendships were brokered on Bay Street and he cherished all of them. In fact, many of his dearest friends to this day were met while selling high and buying low. Lionel also loved the game of golf. Many weekends were spent with his golf buddies at North Halton and Osprey Valley. His time on the course brought him much joy and provided a welcomed escape from a very stressful career. Many putts were drained as were many wallets because of friendly wagers. He loved his pals from the course and his dream was to one day return to the game he loved once his health issues were resolved. Above all else, his greatest love was for his family. He shared an incredible 54 years of marriage with his wife Patti who was by his side through thick and thin sharing all of life’s ups and downs. From travel adventures down south with the Florida gang, to meeting up with local friends for Sunday breakfast, they enjoyed spending quality time together and the everyday routines of married life. Lionel felt his Patti was his everything. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Lionel’s family affectionately referred to him as the bionic man, sadly today the bionic man’s battery finally ran out. Arrangements entrusted to MacIntyre Family Funeral Home, 5399 Wellington Road 52, Erin. Cremation has taken place.
