Cambridge man airlifted to hospital after fall from conservation area cliff

ROCKWOOD – A 22-year-old Cambridge man was air lifted to hospital with significant injuries following an incident at the Rockwood Conservation Area on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to a report about an individual who fell from a cliff at about 2:20pm on Dec. 14.

Nine Guelph/Eramosa firefighters arrived on scene shortly thereafter.

“[He] fell off a cliff in the conservation area and sustained significant injuries and needed to be extricated from the conservation area by us,” Fire Chief Jim Petrik explained.

“He was just hiking in the area and there was slippery conditions and he slipped off the cliff base and fell down about 10 meters.”

Ornge Air Ambulance landed on site and transported the individual to a trauma unit in Hamilton.

Wellington OPP and Guelph Wellington Paramedic Services were also on scene.

OPP officials called the injuries “life altering.”

Petrik said there was some delay in getting the man to the helicopter due to the location.

“We had difficulty in gaining access to him just because of the nature of where the fall occurred, and we had to carry him approximately half a kilometre out of the conservation area,” Petrik added.

“So it took us about 30 minutes to extricate him and then put him in care of the air ambulance.”
