Committee celebrates 200th anniversary of Hillsburgh with commemorative stamp

HILLSBURGH – This year marked the 200th anniversary of the founding of Hillsburgh in 1821.

To celebrate, the Let’s Get Hillsburgh Growing Committee, in collaboration with Canada Post, has released an official commemorative anniversary stamp.

As Hillsburgh approached the milestone earlier this year, Wellington County councillor and committee member Jeff Duncan said the committee wanted to do something to commemorate the occasion and decided to do a stamp design.

“It was just something to serve as a souvenir for the community,” Duncan said of the purpose behind the stamp.

The stamp includes the distinctive maple leaf Hillsburgh community sign that is featured prominently in the community, Duncan stated in an email to the Advertiser.

Part of the inspiration behind the design of the stamp, he explained, was to show a connection to the land.

The Hillsburgh stamp is available in a booklet of 12 Canadian Post domestic mail and can be used for regular mail, kept as a souvenir or purchased as a gift.

They are $15 per book – cash only – and available at Quickpick Convenience, located at 99 Trafalgar Road.

“Hillsburgh doesn’t have a large downtown so part of it was to drive some business to the downtown area,” Duncan said, adding “it’s gone well so far, we’ve sold two thirds of our initial order.”

The committee began selling the stamp on Nov. 19 and has already put in for a second order, Duncan explained.

“We’re hoping to stock these until Christmas and if we have a decent amount, we’ll do another run of them as well,” he added.
