Fergus Lions Club’s second modified toy drive on until Dec. 3

FERGUS – The Fergus Lions Club’s annual toy drive started on Nov. 8 without fanfare, without its usual cheque presentation, and in fact without toys.

For the second year, the Lions are asking for donations of cash or gift cards – and not actual toys – to help supplement the Centre Wellington Food Bank’s Christmas Hamper program.

“Our hope is that next year, we can resume the fun tradition of a proper toy drive at the holidays, as we know people enjoy the wonderment toys and games bring to children,” Gary Waterhouse, chair of the toy drive, wrote in Nov. 8 letter to the Advertiser.

“But until that time, we hope we can count on the incredible generosity of our community to make this year’s toy drive a success.”

Waterhouse added, “For more than 20 years, the Fergus Lions Club has been astounded by the kindness and support you have shown this event, and we are grateful for your continued support.”

The Lions have again partnered with Reliable Ford to host the toy drive. Gift cards and cash donations can be dropped off at the dealership, located at 990 Tower Street South in Fergus, until Dec. 3.

Elora residents unable to get to Reliable Ford can drop their donations at 124 John St. in Elora.

Organizers are asking that the original receipt for the dollar value of the gift certificate be enclosed with it, so the balance of the card is clear. This will allow food bank volunteers to ensure gift cards are distributed evenly.

The cards will be given to clients so they can choose gifts for their families to unwrap on Christmas.

Gift cards can be purchased at most grocery stores, restaurants and chain stores, but organizers are encouraging the purchase of gift cards from local stores to make it easy for families to access gifts close to home and to help shop local initiatives.

Last year the club collected $8,000 in cash and gift cards for the food bank.

The toy drive ends Dec. 3.
