ERIN – People will see firetrucks parading the streets as the Erin and Hillsburgh Firefighters Association conducts its annual food drive collection, which will run as a drive-by format again this year.
“We did this last year with the COVID restrictions and found it to be a tremendous success so we’re looking to do that again,” Erin firefighter John Valentine said.
“What we found though was a lot of people on the day-of didn’t know about it so we’re just trying to pump out as much information to get people putting their food out in boxes or bags on day-of or the morning-of so that we can get a bit better response.”
All donations will go toward East Wellington Community Services.
“It’s a massive boost to them that they always need,” Valentine said.
Last year was the firefighters association’s largest food drive to date, both in weight and dollars, Valentine said, but they felt it could’ve been better if more people knew about it. Pickup will begin at 9am on Nov. 20 and will go until 2pm, or however long it takes to get through the town, Valentine explained.
The association is asking people to place non-perishable food donations at the end of their driveway.
Donations will only be collected off driveways from those living within the town boundaries.
“Made up” bags are also available for purchase at Marcs Valu-Mart in Erin or Foodland in Hillsburgh for $20 per bag.
Valentine also thanked the Town of Erin Fire and Emergency Services for the use of their vehicles to collect donations.
