GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) was honoured to receive an automated external defibrillator (AED) pn June 25, thanks to the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund.
The fund is dedicated to the donation of life-saving defibrillators to public buildings in the name of fallen law enforcement, fire, EMS and military members who have died in the line of duty.
The memorial fund was founded by OPP Sgt. Patrick Armstrong in honour of his friend and fellow OPP officer Dave Mounsey, who died in the line of duty back in 2006.
Armstrong presented the defibrillator to Gloria Kovach in honour of her daughter, Guelph Police Const. Jennifer Kovach. Const. Kovach died on March 14, 2013 as a result of an on-duty motor vehicle collision.
This was the second defibrillator donated in Cost. Kovach’s name.
“This is our 126th defibrillator donated,” said Armstrong during the presentation. “We hope you never have to use it.”
The presentation was made in front of the Jennifer Kovach Memorial Garden in the new GHS community gardens, a space named by family and friends in loving memory of Const. Kovach.
Gloria Kovach told the crowd that it was amazing to have both the defibrillator donation and the memorial at GHS in combination, as it reflects Jennifer’s “dedication to her community, her love for people and enhancing their lives, and her absolute love for animals.”
Kovach and Armstrong also thanked members of the Guelph Police Service, including Chief Gordon Cobey, for attending the presentation and showing its support.
The defibrillator itself will be placed in the front lobby of the building at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd. – which is an easily accessible space.
