CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit (TMU) conducted a community-focused Traffic Safety Initiative in the Township of Centre Wellington on June 30.
The purpose of the initiative was to target the “Big Four Offences” of speeding/aggressive driving, impaired driving, distracted driving and failure to properly wear seatbelts.
“These ‘Big Four’ offences are far too often found to be contributing factors in the fatal and personal injury motor vehicle collisions on provincial roadways,” OPP officials stated in a July 2 press release.
During the one-day traffic initiative members of the TMU conducted targeted enforcement in the various communities within Centre Wellington Township.
As a result, a total of 59 charges were laid, including:
– speeding, 28;
– failure to properly wear a seatbelt, nine;
– distracted driving, three; and
– other Highway Traffic Act/Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act charges, 19.
“Wellington OPP is committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the motoring public. We will continue to be highly visible and active in our communities, as we strive to change driver behaviour through public education and enforcement,” said Sgt. Darryl Porterfield of the Wellington OPP Traffic Management Unit.
“Each month the Traffic Management Unit looks forward to conducting a targeted traffic safety initiative in a different community within Wellington County. Our sincere appreciation goes out to the majority of drivers who choose to operate their vehicles in a safe and courteous manner,” Porterfield added.
