GUELPH/ERAMOSA – Mayor Chris White paid tribute to two long time residents of Guelph/Eramosa during recent council meetings.
Warren Parkinson, 94, passed away on April 13.
Parkinson served the community of the Township of Eramosa. He was a member and later a chair of the Eramosa School Board where he saw change as one-room schoolhouses consolidated into two modern schools.
He was the reeve of Eramosa Township from 1971 to 1974 and was one of the main drivers behind bringing municipal water and sewers to the town of Rockwood. He also served as on the board of directors of Halwell Mutual Insurance and the Guelph General Hospital.
“He was a pretty significant player in the municipality and the school boards,” White said at the May 3 meeting. “So just a sad note for a gentleman who did a lot for our community in his time.”
Doris Ens, 84, passed on May 11. Ens was a long time president of the Rockwood Lioness, known for her cancer fundraisers and organizing events in the community of Rockwood.
‘Incredibly sad’
“We are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of resident and friend, Doris Ens. Doris was such a warm, caring and compassionate individual who dedicated her time and energy to our community through many charitable organizations including the Rockwood Lioness’. She was admired by both Council and staff and will truly be missed. Our deepest condolences go out to Doris’ family,” Guelph/Eramosa Township officials state in a Facebook post.
“Ever since I’ve been in the community, she’s been a heart of the community,” White said in a tribute at the May 17 meeting. “She’s always been helpful, and she’s always been there.
“She’ll be sadly missed, and I wanted to pass on my condolences to her family, all the Lioness’ and everyone who will miss Doris. Sad day indeed.”
