Speedside United Church offers ‘drive-thru’ Farmer’s Breakfast event this year

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Speedside United Church is offering a new take-out model to their annual Farmer’s Breakfast. The event will run Saturday, June 26, from 8am to 10am.

Twice a year, for nearly 20 years, members of Speedside United Church have put on a breakfast as a fundraiser for the church, with one event held in the spring and one in the fall. Both events scheduled in 2020 were cancelled due to COVID-19.

Speedside Church advertiser and representative Bruce Miller said in April, they decided to do it as a ‘take out’ style event. However, the event was postponed until now due to the third wave of the pandemic.

The event is pre-order only and will operate as a drive through, stationed in the parking lot of the church. Traffic will be directed through the lot with someone to deliver meals to cars as they come by.

Miller said the menu won’t be as complete as the former sit-down farmer’s breakfasts of the past.

“We’re just doing now what we feel we can serve as best we can,” he said.

This year’s meal will include peameal on a bun, home fries and baked beans. Everything will be pre-packaged upon delivery.

“Unfortunately, there will not be the comradery of 15 or 20 men preparing and serving breakfasts to 100 or so people,” Miller said. “But under present conditions we are making an effort to keep the Farmer’s Breakfast tradition going.

“Some of the men won’t miss washing dishes,” he added with a laugh.

Miller said the church will be providing approximately 100 meals. All donations go towards Speedside United Church. Individuals can pre-order their meals by Sunday, June 20. To place an order, call 519-822-1731.
