Plant sale held in Clifford

CLIFFORD – The community and commuters alike supported the Clifford and District Horticultural Society plant sale on May 21 in the Clifford Rotary Celebration Square parking lot in Clifford.

Town of Minto workers installed fencing to set the perimeter needed to fully recognize the COVID-19 protocols requiring adequate spacing for such an event.

President Vic Palmer and volunteers Don Cornhill and Don Senek set out the array of hostas, black eyed Susans, Soloman seal, bee balm, Lily of the valley, and lots of other plants, including little trees and buckets of bulbs that were all donated by members of the Society.

Another surprising amount of bagged bird seed, peanuts, mulch, and soil was donated for the event.

Elaine Young greeted the gardening enthusiasts eager to find those plants for their gardens. Wheel barrows were filled to overflowing for some shoppers, while others brought their own wagons and strollers to hold their pots of perennials. Some only needed one hosta to fill in a bare spot in their garden. Most of the plants were priced at $5.

The sale began at noon under hazy skies and continued through to six o’clock under full sun. By 3pm the bulk of the sales were over and the volunteers could relax under the shade of the tent with treasurer Karen Dowler who collected the money. Memberships were also available for $5 per adult.

Membership fees allow the society to purchase plants to help beautify the village and they also receive grants to help with the society plantings and programs, namely monthly information meetings, flower shows, and garden tour.
