WDGPH reports 56 new COVID-19 cases in region over weekend

Two new COVID-related deaths reported as active cases continue to decline

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) is reporting 56 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend (May 28 to 30).

That brings the active case count in the region to 190 — down from 264 on May 25 and a far cry from the record high of 679 set on April 18.

The region’s case rate per 100,000 population also continues to drop dramatically, from 96.8 at the beginning of the month to 38.5 as of May 29.

As of May 27, 4.7 per cent of COVID-19 tests are returning positive for the virus.

There are 21 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of May 27, with nine in intensive care at either Guelph General Hospital or Headwaters Health Care in Orangeville (Wellington County hospitals do not have ICUs).

Variants

As of May 25, WDGPH reports 69.9% of all COVID-19 cases confirmed the region (seven-day moving average) are variants of concern.

To date there have been 2,013 confirmed cases of the B117 (UK) variant, 36 cases of the P1 (Brazilian) variant, three of the B1617 (Indian) variant and none of the B1351 (South African) variant.

An additional 202 individuals have screened positive for a variant of concern not yet identified.

Local trends

Wellington County has 12 new cases over the weekend and now has 38 active cases, down from 57 on May 25 and a significant decrease from the record high of 122 set on April 19.

Dufferin County has 46 active cases as of May 31, down from 64 reported on May 25.

Guelph has 108 active cases as of May 31, down from the 124 cases previously reported on May 25.

Public health is also reporting two new COVID-19 related deaths since last week’s update.

WDGPH spokesperson Danny Williamson confirmed a man in his 70s from Wellington County and a woman in her 70s from Guelph recently died with the virus.

As of May 31, there have been 115 deaths attributed to the virus across the WDGPH region, including 38 in Wellington County.

Vaccines/outbreaks

Since May 25, another 15,822 residents in the WDGPH region have received at least one vaccine dose, bringing the total as of May 31 to 160,056 residents, or 62.7% of the population aged 16 or older.

Public health was aiming to have 75% of the region’s eligible population at least partially vaccinated by June.

A total of 169,038 doses have been administered in the region as of May 31.

There are currently no facility outbreaks and three workplace outbreaks, as well as two outbreaks at childcare facilities in the WDGPH region:

  • Eureka Kids in Erin, one student case and two staff cases, declared on May 14; and
  • Hyland Centre Child Care in Dufferin County, one student case and one staff case, declared on May 18.
