WELLINGTON COUNTY – While the active COVID-19 case count in the region remains high, it has dropped significantly over the last two weeks.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) reported 141 new cases over the weekend (April 30 to May 2), bringing active cases in the region to 435.
That marks a significant decrease from last week (588 on April 26) and from the record-high two weeks ago (679 on April 19).
As of May 3, the region’s case rate per 100,000 population is 96.8 and its test positivity rate is 6.0%. A week ago those figures were 141.7 and 6.3% respectively.
Across the region, 26 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, 14 in intensive care units (up from seven one week ago) at either Guelph General Hospital or Headwaters Health Care in Orangeville (Wellington County hospitals do not have ICUs).
Variants
As of May 3, WDGPH is reporting 75.6% of all COVID-19 cases confirmed in the region (seven-day moving average) are variants of concern.
To date there have been 1,446 confirmed cases of the B117 (UK) variant, eight cases of the P1 (Brazilian) variant and none of the B1351 (South African) variant.
An additional 168 individuals have screened positive for a variant of concern that has not yet been identified.
Local trends
Wellington County had 37 new cases over the weekend and now has 109 active cases, up slightly from 101 a week ago.
Dufferin County had 56 new cases over the weekend and now has 119 active cases, down from 159 one week ago.
Guelph had 45 new cases over the weekend and now has 198 active cases, down significantly from 318 last week.

Vaccines/outbreaks
As of May 3, 100,414 residents in the WDGPH region – or 39.3% of the population aged 16 and older – have received at least one vaccine dose.
A total of 107,123 doses have been administered in the region.
There are no facility outbreaks or school cases in the WDGPH region as of May 3.
