GUELPH – The local GoGo Grandmothers group is part of a collective that is launching a concert in support of grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa.
The 90-minute concert is free and will be posted online on April 15 at 7:30pm and will stream for 72 hours.
The concert includes music, dance, storytelling, drumming, testimonials and features a tapestry of Canadian talent, including Steven Page, the National Ballet, Stratford Players, Kym Gouchie, David Myles and Genticorum.
The Guelph GoGo Grandmothers are part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, which was launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation in 2006 in response to the crisis faced by African grandmothers raising children orphaned by AIDS.
The foundation partners with grassroots community-based organizations and on-the-ground projects.
“COVID only compounds their problems,” said Guelph member Joanne Millie.
The concert marks the 15th anniversary of the campaign.
While the event is free, donations are welcome and pre-registration is required.
