It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our Mother, Nana, Marmie in her 97th year. She is predeceased by her parents Mertie Moorehouse and Dr. James Moran, her husband Franklin Speers, Emmette Miles Speers (infant son of Meagan and Jason Speers – at birth), and siblings: Betty Thornton, Ronald Moran, Curtis Moran, Lois Heeney, Ruth Heeney and Marilyn Johnson. Dorothy is survived by her sister-in-law June Steward and brother-in-law, Gordon Speers. Mom leaves behind her seven children: Sandra (Bill) Kane, Bedford N.S., Carol (Jack) Allan, Binbrook, Wendy (Alex) Smith, Kenilworth, Jim (Nancy) Speers, Elora, Don (Debbie) Speers, Elora, Ken (Diane) Speers, Palmerston, Debbie (Joe) Wilkie, Fall River N.S. As Nana, she adored her 23 grandchildren, proudly able to recite each of their birthdays. They are scattered across Canada and the United States. As Marmie, she was able to meet and hold almost all of her 46 great-grandchildren. Family was everything to her. Mom grew up in Ottawa and worked as a secretary at the Department of National Defence. In 1946 she met and married Dad and they celebrated 64 years together until his passing in 2010. After moving to Elora, Mom co-founded and helped build the family business, Speers Electric. Mom was very active in the community, helping to organize Teen Town in the ‘50’s. She attended Elora United Church for over 70 years, where she participated in the Choir, U.C.W. and Couples Club. As a member of Eastern Star, she held the esteemed office of Worthy Grand Matron. Her home on Geddes Street, was always open to friends and neighbours. Upon their retirement, she and Dad started a B&B in the family home. For many years they welcomed guests from all over the world. They travelled extensively across Canada and the States visiting their relatives and acquaintances. Mom travelled to Ireland for her 80th birthday and to New Zealand in her 90’s. Mom loved to be in her kitchen baking pies, cookies, cakes and squares or bottling preserves, jams and, her much-loved icicle pickles. Everyone was always welcome to join in or sit and chat. Our Mom was a firm believer of “a cup half-full” philosophy – you never heard her complain. Her gentleness, humour, kindness, grace and love will be missed by us all, especially those hugs. We love you Mom, Nana, Marmie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke or The Canadian Hearing Society. Celebration of Life will be held at Giddy’s Funeral Home, Fergus with Internment in Elora. The Visitation and Funeral will be attended by immediate family only. The Funeral Service for Dorothy will be Live – Streamed on Friday, March 19th, 2021 beginning at 10:50am. Live stream can be viewed by visiting the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home website, www.grahamgiddyfh.com. The Speers family would like to thank Dr. Stickney and all the staff in the Walnut Grove Neighbourhood at the Wellington Terrace for the compassionate and loving care that they gave our Mom. She treasured and cherished you all as she did everyone she met – with loving arms wide open.
