WELLINGTON COUNTY – The county has unveiled a new online tool that encourages residents to order takeout from local businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, notably the latest province-wide lockdown.
The “Takeout Food in Wellington County” map, created by Wellington County’s planning and economic development departments, displays takeout locations across all seven county municipalities.
In addition to location, it allows users to search by mealtime and type of food.
“Restaurants and some food businesses have been disproportionally affected by the pandemic,” said George Bridge, chair of the economic development committee.
“Ordering takeout food is a great way to support these businesses and keep them in our communities.”
County officials say that according to Restaurants Canada, almost half of small- and medium-sized independent restaurants are in danger of closing permanently if conditions do not improve.
And even when they do reopen, these businesses will have limited capacity to meet provincial health guidelines.
The county is also running a contest that encourages users of the new tool/map to share photos of their takeout food on social media using the hashtag #takeoutwellington for a chance to win one of seven $50 gift cards to local restaurants.
The map and contest information can be found at www.wellington.ca/takeout.
Businesses wishing to be added to the map or edit their details can submit their information to the website.
