PALMERSTON – The Darren’s Day steering committee has announced the 2021 Darren’s Day event will be cancelled due to physical distancing requirements related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The event, which brings together Minto Fire, Wellington County OPP, Town of Minto, Palmerston Marlins, Palmerston Lions Club, Minto 81s and Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington (CSGW), has been held on Family Day since 2019 and is a celebration of community and family in the name of Darren More.
He was killed by an impaired driver on July 11, 2018.
Darren’s Day was held at the Palmerston Community Centre and neighbouring ball diamonds and featured food, entertainment, sports and crime awareness for the past two years, with the 2020 instalment taking place only weeks before the nation-wide shutdown.
“Darren’s Day is something our entire family enjoys, and we are sorry to see it cannot go ahead for 2021,” said Pam More, widow of Darren.
“We hope everyone will keep Darren’s Day in mind for 2022.”
“We wanted to hold off this decision as long as we could; hoping things would improve,” stated CSGW program coordinator Sarah Bowers-Peter, a member of the Darren’s Day steering committee.
“However, there does not seem to be an opportunity for us to hold this event within the necessary public health guidelines.”
Most partnering organizations are shuttering activity or COVID-19, therefore announcements of how 2020 funds were utilized will be made in 2021, organizers state.
