WELLINGTON COUNTY – With a province-wide shutdown looming, public health is again reporting more than 100 new weekend cases of COVID-19 in the region.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) reported 133 new cases on Dec. 21.
The update notes there are currently 315 active cases in the region, up 45% from 216 a week ago, and 18 people are hospitalized with the virus, up from 11.
This is the third weekend in a row new WDGPH cases have surpassed triple digits. Previous weekend totals were:
- 117 on Dec. 14;
- 100 on Dec. 7;
- 76 on Nov. 30; and
- 75 on Nov. 23.
Twenty of the new weekend cases are in Wellington County, which now has two people in hospital and 44 active cases:
- 11 in Wellington North;
- nine in Mapleton;
- eight in Guelph-Eramosa;
- six in Centre Wellington;
- five in Erin;
- three in Puslinch; and
- two in Minto.
The City of Guelph has the most cases in the region (68 new and 152 active, with 10 hospitalizations).
Dufferin County has 35 new cases, 59 active cases (35 in Orangeville) and six people in hospital.
Regional COVID-19 indicators such as case rate per 100,000 population and test positivity rate continue to rise in the WDGPH region.
On Dec. 21 those figures were 92.6 and 3.6% respectively, marking significant increases in the last two weeks (63.4 and 3.1% respectively on Dec. 7).
