4-H members learn outdoor skills

The first event of the Mimosa 4-H Outdoor Club was held on May 6 at the Belwood Lake Conservation Area’s “Shimano Take A Kid Fishing Day” – a free event put on by the Grand River Conservation Authority.

Members arrived dressed in their rain gear, gloves, and boots. We took part in the afternoon session where members travelled through several stations learning how to cast, rig lures, tie flies, identify different fishing equipment, and then tried our luck free fishing in the stocked trout pond.

We learned a lot about fishing and had a really fun time.

The second meeting of Mimosa’s 4-H Outdoor Club was held on May 16 at Mimosa United Church.

We held our election of officers and the results were as followed:  Sam as president, Sarah as vice-president, Mikayla as secretary and Nadia as press reporter.  Sam opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge.

Our club had a guest speaker, Miriam Bailey, a paramedic with Halton Region, who spoke about what items should be included in a first aid kit.

We then learned about common injuries such as broken bones, scrapes, burns, etc and how to treat these. Members then rotated through three stations learning various skills such as making various types of slings, how to wrap up an injury that is bleeding, and how to hold and secure a broken limb.

Members practiced on each other.  Sam closed the meeting with the 4-H motto.
