For the fourth meeting of the Rockwood 4-H vet club, we went to the Animal Health lab of the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.
First, we went on an exciting tour to all the offices and labs. The labs had a bunch of microscopes, sinks and tables to analyze samples to identify problems.
Then, we went into the wet lab, where we looked at some bones from different animals. There was everything from bones from a sheltie to a rhinoceros.
Then, we looked at the organs and body structure of a pig. The pig had a problem with its hind hock and that is why it was sent to the lab. This was an amazing opportunity to see things like the heart, lungs and intestines first hand.
This lab is important for vets and farmers to help diagnose why animals get sick or die. We had our meeting at the end including the 4H pledge and motto. A huge thank you to Dr. Josepha Delay for the very informative morning.
College Royal
For the fifth meeting of the Rockwood 4H vet club, we went to College Royal, at the University of Guelph.
First off, we went to the Ontario Veterinary College building and saw a display about rats and mazes, and the use of animals in testing. Then, we went to a human anatomy display. We had lots of fun there.
We learned about all the different bones and organs in your body with some really cool specimens. We did a cool cast experiment on our fingers, as well as took our blood pressure. Turns out, mine is really good.
We also looked at some real hearts, lungs and torsos. We toured the equine areas as well and learned about how vets and owners care for horses. Then we went to “Old McDonald`s new farm”, and saw a fistulated cow with a hole in its stomach.
Don`t worry, it doesn`t hurt the cow. It is used to learn how cows digest different foods. Then we saw some pigs, chickens, horses, sheep, and cattle. After that, we went to the wild animal exhibit in the science building to see wild birds, amphibians, spiders and reptiles including real snakes.
