4-H club explores Adventures in STEM program

The Damascus 4-H members recently completed the final meeting of the Adventures in STEM 4-H club.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

The club members included Kelsey Lennox, Kaydence Whaley, Summer Bott, Jamie Lennox, Graham Loughran, Johnathan Hill and Chloe Bzikot. The leaders were Tayler Black and Janice Walsh.

This club consisted of six meetings.

At the first meeting, the members  made colour-changing milk and cakes with various combinations of ingredients missing. The theme of this meeting was food science.

Weather was the theme of the second meeting. At this meeting, we made clouds in a jar and wind meters.

At the third meeting, we made nests and tested how well our “egg” retained temperature and we did a hands-on see-through puzzle of a horse’s skeletal and digestive system.

The theme for this meeting was animal science.

The fourth meeting’s  theme was engineering. We would like to thank Todd and Megan, our guest leaders, who talked to us about what it is to be an engineer and challenged us to make load bearing bridges.

The fifth meeting was on ecosystems. We made an ecosystem from a two litre pop bottle for a goldfish.

Thank you to Mary Fraser for being our guest leader.

For our final meeting our theme was explosions. We made lemon volcanoes as well as a cola and Mentos explosion.

We all had a lot of fun in this club. We hope to share some of this fun with you when we host a presentation and hands on booth and the Arthur Fall Fair on Sept. 8 starting at 1pm. We hope you come and explore STEM with us.
