4-H club dives into cooking

The first meeting of the Badenoch 4-H Club was held Feb. 9 at the home of Joan Law. The course is called “Food for all Seasons”  We chose to name our club Badenoch Smart Cooks.

Nathan Fraser was elected president with Landon Robertson vice-president.  The secretary and press reporter will be roving.

Marion Hunter told us the importance of a shopping list and how to tell if “specials” are really special in each situation. We learned to read labels. We learned the basics like produce, meat, dairy and bakery are positioned around the edge of the store. Highly processed convenience foods are in the centre and candy is at the checkout. It is best not to shop when you are hungry.

Now is the season to use winter vegetables like carrots, turnip, cabbage, beets and squash, which are grown locally.

We made granola mix, which was baked for one hour at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.  Then, each person added raisins, dried cranberries or nuts to make a tasty treat.

The meeting closed with the 4-H Pledge and 4-H Motto “learn to do by doing.”

Second meeting

The second meeting of the Badenoch Smart Cooks 4-H Club was held at the home of Joan Law on Feb. 16. Jabula Dube acted as president and welcomed everyone. The minutes were read by Thandu Dube and approved as read.

The roll call was answered by “What can you add to granola?”  We learned more about reading labels on cereal, milk and canned vegetables and fruit.

We then started cooking.  We made Ole Chili Mix, which was used in our chili con carne. The extra mix is for another time. We made corn bread (Jonny Cake).  Both were very good.

We closed with the 4-H pledge and motto.
