20 years of summer art workshops

The Wellington County Museum and Archives is offering summer art workshops for the 20th season.  From July 3 to 31, participants can choose from 16 workshops, lasting two, three or five days.

“We are pleased to offer a diverse selection of media and skill levels, all taught by the area’s top art instructors,” the press release stated. “Whether you want to ‘brush-up’ existing abilities or discover new ones, there is sure to be a course that will inspire you.”

Among the instructors teaching the workshops is Elora artist Heather Woods who will teach a three-day course on glass fusing.

Her workshop will kick-off the series on July 3 to 5. Woods’ workshop will include painting with kiln-fired glass enamels, glass fusing and slumping. In the workshop, students will create imagery using glass frits, powders and paint. Students can choose to make a bowl, platter, pin or pendant which they will be able to keep.

Another local instructor is Supria Karmaker. Supria works with a mixture of wax, resin and pigments from oil colours. Called encaustic mixed media, students will have the opportunity to explore techniques from beginner to advanced, resulting in beautiful, luminous and richly layered artworks. Karmaker’s workshop will take place July 13 to 17.

Printmaker Clive Lewis is also returning for a week-long workshop from July 20 to 24.  In an inspirational program students will explore the art of relief printmaking, as well as learn how to transfer drawings onto a plate, engrave in various styles and finally print.

The workshop will use both mechanical and hand pressing methods and participants will learn about inks, papers, limited editions, mono-printing and post-printing processes. The joy of printmaking is having multiple artworks to share and exchange prints in class.

Visit www.wellington.ca/museum for a complete listing of all 16 workshops. Brochures are also available at the Wellington County Museum and Archives and all Wellington County and Guelph libraries. Registration can be taken over the phone, in person or by mail.

The cost of the workshops, including HST are:

– $254.25 for a five day course;

-$151.55 for a three day course; and

$101.70 for a two-day course.

All workshops run from 9am to 4pm each day with approximately an hour for lunch.
