1,800km in muscular dystrophy walk

On April 29, Elora Public School participated in The Walk Across Canada in a Day – The major annual fundraiser for Jesse’s Journey, which funds research to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Since founder John Davidson, walked across Canada (from April, 1998 to January 1999), the Jesse Davidson Endowment has been able to fund more than $2-million in research across North America.

Jamie Waugh, a grade 2 student at Elora, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Through the efforts of the school, the students walked approximately 1,800km and in turn raised $1,110.17, which was matched by the Fergus branch of ScotiaBank.

As a result of that, Jamie was able to take $2,152.34 to be included as a part of the $7,700 total raised by Team Jamie Waugh. The annual Walk Across Canada in a Day event is held the first Friday in May and took place in London ‘s Springbank Gardens (formerly Wonderland Gardens). Walkers can travel the entire 33km route, or any part of it, raising pledges for Jesse’s Journey to continue to help fund research. (The reason the walk is a 33km route is because that is the distance that Davidson walked each day when he walked across Canada – a total distance of 8,272 kilometres.)

Last year, the Walk across Canada managed to not only cover the country – but all the way back too – and raised over $223,000. For more information or to contribute see http://www.jessesjourney.com/ .
