Residents of Wellington County now have equal access to emergency response through improved 911 service.
New technology is now in place to allow OPP communications staff to receive emergency calls for service via “Text with 911” from people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired.
In order to use the new service, members of the deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired community must register cell phones with their carrier in advance (for a list of carriers visit www.textwith911.ca/wireless-service-providers). Only pre-registered phones will work with the service and older model phones may not be compatible.
In an emergency, residents can dial 911, the call will be recognized by the 911 operator as one eligible for text messaging and the caller will receive confirmation via a text message. The caller can then communicate with police via text message. For more information visit www.textwith911.ca.
