Due to a legal clerical error, Centre Wellington councillors once again had to finalize details on the disposition of land between the municipality and Pearle Hospitality for developments on both sides of the Grand River.
On Sept. 7, councillors reviewed a report from Smith Valeriote regarding the disposition of portions of Allen and Price Streets.
Centre Wellington CAO Andy Goldie said when the township previously approved the disposition and closing of streets, its legal team missed a few key points and the firm was asked to update a bylaw to ensure clean titles of the property.
In July the township passed bylaws to declare all of the lands “surplus,” to authorize their sale, and to close part of Ross and Victoria Streets.
But two pieces of land included in the disposition bylaw were not included in the road closure bylaws (Allen Street and part of Price Street). As a result the final sale of the land was deferred to Sept. 12, although the document sent to council stated Aug. 12.
Councillor Mary Lloyd said “we pay a lot of money for our legal services” and she appeared disappointment with the “pretty serious clerical error.”
Noting that a street was missed and then an incorrect date included, Lloyd asked if the law firm could be reminded the township wants to pay for services “one time, not multiple times.”
