Committee invites all to walk to Olympics

WELLINGTON NORTH

Local Trails and In Motion committees have announced Walk to the Olympics as the kick-off event to celebrate Wellington North being a route community for the Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay.

The Walk to the Olympics program will begin on June 7 at 3pm at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex featuring an Olympian guest speaker.

The program invites people to register the mileage they contribute through activities including running, walking, biking, swimming, and hiking.

Wellington North’s trails committee will track the collective mileage on a map of Canada posted at the sports complex. People are invited to track their mileage.

In addition to that event, numerous others are being planned for months leading up to the Olympics, culminating with the torch relay celebrations at the sports complex the day the torch comes through town on Dec. 28.

Coming events celebrating the relay include a bike to Holstein on July 4 starting at 8:30am at the Mount Forest Chamber of Commerce, a Luther Marsh hike on Aug. 9 at 2pm at the Mount Forest sports complex, an Allen Park hike on Oct. 4 at 2pm at the Mount Forest sports complex, A Smale Tract hike on Nov. 1 at 2pm, meeting at County Road 6, south of Highway 89, and a trail walk on  Dec. 6 at 2pm meeting at the Mount Forest Chamber of Commerce.

Val Mitchell, of the Wellington North trails advisory committee, stated, “this is an excellent and fun opportunity to encourage activity in our community while celebrating the fact that Wellington North has been chosen as a route community for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch relay.”

Anyone can get involved in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a part of Olympic history. Interested parties can view the torchbearer requirements and submit their application online at  www.rbc.com/carrythetorch.
