Chapel roof close to $10,000 over budget

by Chris Daponte

BRUCEDALE

Guelph-Eramosa has retroactively approved an additional $9,374 in costs for a roof replacement at the Gladys Hannah Chapel at the Rockwood Cemetery.

The approved budget for the project was $24,000 (to come from the Gladys Hannah Chapel trust fund) and council awarded the contract earlier this year to William Greens Roofing Ltd. at a cost of $24,600. However, the contractor uncovered several unforeseen problems in October that raised that cost significantly.

“Once the original roof system was removed we observed a portion of the wood deck showing signs of rot and deterioration,” parks and recreation manager Robin Milne said in a Dec. 19 report to council.

“Additionally, the roof deck was not connected to the outside bearing wall.”

There was also damage to other parts of the structure and due to the immediacy of the situation, Milne authorized the extra costs, which totalled $8,774, bringing the total project cost to $33,374.

Council unanimously approved transferring an additional $9,374 from the Gladys Hannah Chapel trust fund, bringing its balance to $36,332.
