Area appeal raised over $3 million for annual United Way campaign

GUELPH

Thanks to donations from thousands of individual and corporate donors, United Way of Guelph and Wellington has raised a record-breaking $3.14 million this year.

“The dedication of our volunteers and generosity of our donors has been incredible this year,” said Marva Wisdom, 2011 United Way fundraising campaign chairman on Dec. 14.

“Raising 10% over the fundraising goal set in September shows the amazing commitment of everyone involved in the United Way campaign,” she said.

The announcement came at the Evergreen Seniors Centre. The centre is home to the Guelph/Wellington Seniors Association, one of the agencies funded by United Way.

“With these donations, United Way will fund over 80 programs that help people in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin Counties every day,” said Ken Dardano, executive director of United Way.

“Every dollar counts,” Dardano said. “Going over the goal means United Way can invest more in social service programs that improve lives and build community.”

The $3.14 million total is based on received and pledged dollars, with some workplace campaigns wrapping up in January.

Over 250 workplaces take part in the campaign, and over 7,000 donors contribute to United Way annually.
