ABOYNE – The Wellington County Museum and Archives has announced the opening of a new exhibit: Out with the Old, In with the App.
It takes visitors on a journey through time, showcasing the evolution of technology and the impact that smartphones have had on our daily lives.
“Imagine you could go back in time and tell your great-grandmother that one day, someone would invent a device that could predict the weather, take photographs, give you directions, play music, manage your banking, and write letters to your family and friends.
“What if you told her that this magical device would also be a flashlight, wallet, calculator, notepad, newspaper, telephone, and it would be small enough to fit in your pocket? Do you think she would believe you?” museum officials ask.
Out with the Old, In with the App features a range of gadgets and devices from the past that have become obsolete due to the rise of smartphones.
By scanning QR codes with their smartphones, visitors can watch videos, listen to music, and learn more about the artifacts on display.
The exhibit also includes an interactive rotary dial phone display, and a voting activity where people can share how they use their smartphones.
“Smartphones have become so ubiquitous in our lives that we often forget how many individual devices they have replaced,” said curator Hailey Johnston.
“We hope visitors will feel nostalgic when they see all these gadgets. Out with the Old, In with the App shares memories of how life used to be, not so long ago, with younger generations who have only ever experienced the technology we embrace today.”
Out with the Old, In with the App runs until Sept. 15.
The galleries are open weekdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm and 11:30am to 4pm on weekends.
Admission is by donation, and visitors of all ages are welcome.
