‘Pandora’s box’

Dear Editor:

RE: Erin council considers First Nations land acknowledgment, Jan. 26.

In the press it was reported that Erin council is considering having land and treaty acknowledgements for “First Nations” as part of the municipal process.

Mayor Allan Alls was quoted as saying that he “struggles with this request.” Like the mayor, I too struggle with this request, but for different reasons.

To acknowledge in a formal statement an expression of “gratitude to those whose territory you reside on” feels good, but does not do good. It is very problematic since it implies that our ownership is in question at best, or that we have no ownership, at worst.

It is divisive and would be opening up a Pandora’s box on our doorstep. While it feels warm and fuzzy, it is not and presents real and present dangers.

If this sounds alarmist please read Christy Blatchford’s book Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy. You will be shocked.

The 1969 White Paper on Indian Affairs proposed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Minister of Indian Affairs, Jean Chretien, recommended the eliminating of “Indian” as a distinct legal status, and regarding Aboriginals as equal citizens like other Canadians.

Unfortunately it was never implemented.

Today we seem to live in an era of hyper political correctness. Radio host and lawyer Howard Levitt stated on CFRB’s morning show that the Law Society of Upper Canada now compels lawyers to actively work for Aboriginal rights as a condition of their license! He says this is completely unconscionable and he will not be party to it.

Neither should we in Erin be overcome by this new groupthink. Council has enough to worry about on its plate.

Les Sinka, Erin
