‘Media circus’

Dear Editor:

I am a resident of Swastika Trail, and have lived on this street for almost 14 years (I am speaking for myself, my husband, and many of the residents who are opposed to a name change).

I have held the position of president of the Bayview Cottagers Association for the last five years and have attended every meeting since 2004. Our AGMs are held at the beginning of September. This is when interested residents gather and discuss any grievances or matters they feel should be addressed.

Only once in the last 13 years has a resident requested a name change be considered. If there have been frequent requests, as stated by Jennifer Horton, for the name of our street to be changed, I don’t know who or when they have been asking.

Puslinch Township records only show a request for the street name change in 1996.

I don’t feel that any survey or organization has the right to remove and rename a privately-owned street. Swastika Trail has been here since 1922 and was named for good luck and prosperity. No symbol has ever been associated with the name, only the eight-letter word.

For 95-plus years it has not been exposed to the negative publicity being hurled at it.

Some of these residents have tolerated the name for 8, 18, some more than 35 years. What or who has changed their thinking over the past few months? The neighbours who have led this publicity-charged media circus have tainted this well-intended name and community.

We are the majority of ones who live here and aren’t offended by the true meaning.  We won a fair and democratic vote on Nov. 1.

If you didn’t like the name, then you should not have moved here.

Donna O’Krafka, PUSLINCH
