Save schoolhouse

Dear Editor:

The letter from Elizabeth Litch regarding the schoolhouse on McNab (Not fair to owner, Oct. 6)fails to address the fact that when a building is removed from the original site, i.e. no longer in situ, it loses a great deal of its meaning and obviously provenance.

The schoolhouse is not the only pre-Confederation building within this group of houses, as within 500 metres of the building there are three other buildings: the old Methodist Church, the first house and office belonging to a doctor and the home of Rev. John Smithhurst.

As we know, prior to making an offer on any property, potential purchasers are made aware of the Heritage restrictions.

Having bought the property regardless of these limitations, as a developer who has many alternatives available to him, it would be a great addition to the village if he could incorporate the schoolhouse in an imaginative manner into the general plan for the new home, without encumbering the ‘passive’ system.

Carol Williams, ELORA
