Good questions

Dear Editor:

I’d like to thank John Scott for his letter regarding the use of OLG funds for public parks and trails (Trail talk, Aug. 4).

It inspired me to actually write a letter, rather than just thinking and stewing.

My anger stems from a Wellington Advertiser article (Centre Wellington councillors investigate best allocation of OLG funds, July 21)  where Mayor Kelly Linton accuses councillor Kirk McElwain of being irresponsible because he is suggesting OLG funds be earmarked for special projects rather than just go into the capital budget.

Really? No legacy projects with the free money, Linton? You have created and insisted on a walking bridge in downtown Elora  with the MacDonald Fund, with no public input on how that allocation was to be spent. It has gone from zero to 100 in your tenure. But McElwain is irresponsible for suggesting the completion of legacy projects with other free money?

Pot calling kettle black.

Councillor Stephen Kitras is absolutely correct: we need to reformulate how that money is spent. We would differ just somewhat on his formula spending, as mine would favour a bit more money for parks - a place for people to go who already live here. I agree our economic development department needs an injection.

There is a Facebook thread under the Fergus/Elora Community News (about 100 comments deep with 5,900 people in that group) about eight youth who were last week at 1:30am running around downtown Fergus drunk. In the last few months increased thefts and illegal tagging has been identified. I’d like to suggest that if these youth were perhaps physically exhausted by some zero-fee facilities designed for them, they might actually be in bed sleeping at these hours instead of creating chaos for our seniors and young families.

I’ve been advocating for a skatepark for years and I truly hope this project will be green-lit by our inspired councillors looking for creative ways to spend the free money we are apparently surrounded with.

Please keep up the good questions, councillors Kitras, McElwain, Fred Morris and Mary Lloyd.

Staci Barron, Elora
