Boredom beneficial

Dear Editor:

As someone who enjoyed a long career of riding the school bus morning and night for many years, I reflect back on that experience as social, playful and yes, boring.

It’s because of this experience I gained social skills, endless hours of day dreaming and reflecting, the ability to do homework (which rarely happened), and sitting quietly and looking out a window at nature.

Youth today are missing out on all of this - always glued to a screen or tablet, always on the go missing out on a key experience of growing up: being bored!

The school bus is probably the last place anywhere that isn’t connected and it should stay that way.

Too bad kiddos, suffer ... it’s building you into a better human being. Enjoy being bored daydreaming, and have fun with your friends in the present while it lasts. You’re only young once and that long, long bus ride without the internet is just what reality ordered!

Amanda Den Haan, FERGUS
