Good news for Town of Erin

by Chris Daponte

Erin residents, desperately in need of some good news, should be thrilled to read this edition of the Wellington Advertiser.

Erin’s Zoe Bergermann, 23, will be competing for the first time for Canada at the Winter Olympics in snowboard cross, one of the Games’ most exciting sports. We can only imagine the pride and excitement Bergermann - and her family and friends - must be feeling  (be sure to watch on Feb. 15 at 8pm).

Brianne Jenner, 26, who calls Erin home during the off-season, will once again be representing Canada as part of our national women’s hockey team. The PyeongChang Olympics will mark her second Winter Games. In the gold medal game at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Jenner scored the first goal for the Canadian team, which defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime.

The women’s hockey team will be seeking its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in PyeongChang.

Also on our front page this week is an article about the conclusion (we hope) of the Angelstone Tournaments saga, which has dragged on since 2013. Though not likely to be welcomed by neighbours dealing with the noise and nuisance, the Ontario Municipal Board decision in favour of the town’s zoning approval for the tournaments is a fitting end to a matter that should have been resolved years ago.

On page two is a photo of officials who gathered in Erin to honour Lt. Colonel John McCrae, author of In Flanders Fields, on the 100th anniversary of his death on Jan. 28, 1918. Though not well attended, the event was a timely tribute to a great Canadian.
