UGDSB students take on challenges at the Regional Skills Canada Competition

About 1,260 students from 61 Upper Grand District School Board elementary schools took part in the Regional Skills Canada Competition on April 6 at College Heights Secondary School, Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute and the Centennial Arena in Guelph. Students participating range in age from Grades 4 to 8 and the various competitions include: Lego robotics, Lego mechanics, character animation, TV/video production, health and safety, design and build, construction, green energy and a new challenge of vex robotics. The challenges encourage students to apply their knowledge of math, science and technology in a  hands-on way, providing the opportunity to connect what they are learning in school and possible careers in skilled trades and technologies. The event also encourages collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, innovation and friendly competition between schools. The winning teams from each event move on to the provincial competition in May.
