Thrashers sledge hockey season ends

ELMIRA - The Woolwich Thrashers Junior Sledge Hockey team wrapped up its season with a 5-0 loss to the Kawartha Blazers in the quarter-finals of the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association playoffs.

Travelling to Peterborough to face the second place Blazers on March 18, the Thrashers took to the ice for the team’s very first playoff game, after a hard-fought regular season that saw them finish seventh in the 15-team junior development league, with a record of six wins and four losses.

Goaltender Daniel Peters kept the Thrashers in the game early, with a number of excellent saves, that kept the game tied 0-0 at the halfway mark. However, Kawartha’s experience, coupled with some bad breaks, broke things open in the third period, as the Blazers skated away with the win.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these kids. They fought hard all game, and every game all season, and we just didn’t get the breaks today. We came a long way this year, being our first year in the league, and we’ll continue to grow and get better,” said co-head coach Keith Metzger.

The upcoming 2018-19 season will be an exciting one for the Thrashers as they host the country for the National Sledge Hockey Championships in May of 2019. Next year will also be the Thrashers 10th anniversary in promoting the game of sledge hockey in Woolwich and the surrounding townships, in and around Waterloo Region.
