Learning about newspapers

The 1st Alma Girl Guides visited the Wellington Advertiser on Nov. 27 to learn about newspaper production and were given a tour by reporter Jaime Myslik. The girls were asked to pick out the “who, what, when, where and why” in local news stories; they learned how ads are sold and how they are placed in the newspaper; they were told how stories are developed and how they are positioned in the paper; and after hearing about how flyers are inserted in the paper they were given the opportunity to create a flyer pack. The visit to the Advertiser office was part of the Girl Guides’ work on their reporting badge. The badge also required the Girl Guides to write a news story.   Photo by Olivia Rutt
