Owner facing nine fire code violations after drug bust

WELLINGTON NORTH - A local property owner has been hit with a slew of fire code violations one month after police busted an alleged marijuana grow-op on the property.

On July 7 Wellington County OPP officers seized suspected marijuana with a street value of over $100,000 as well as weapons and drug production and trafficking equipment at a rural residence on Wellington Road 16.

Lawrence Jesse Johnson, 58, of Arthur Township,  and David Andrew Westra, 59, of Sundridge, face a number of marijuana charges in connection with the bust.

On Aug. 8 the Wellington North Fire Service (WNFS) announced the owner of the property has been charged with numerous fire code violations.

“As a result of the fire service investigation and inspection of the dwellings on the property, an ‘immediate threat to life’ Fire Marshal notice was issued ...” stated the press release from Fire Chief Dave Guilbault.

“Ontario Hydro was notified and disconnected the hydro to all dwellings on the property.”

Paul Death of Kitchener, was charged with nine fire code violations related to fire hazards, wiring, compressed gas cylinders, and a lack of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

He is to appear in Guelph court on Sept. 6.

“This is the third joint operation between the WNFS and the OPP in the past two months,” Guilbault stated in the press release.
