Wellington County 4-H Dairy Club

On June 12, the Wellington County 4-H Dairy Club went to Nixon’s Jersey (Rosalea Jersey) Farm in Rockwood for the third meeting of the season. The 4-H members talked about weaning calves and dairy cow judging. Calves should start weaning 10 days before you actually wean from milk into starter/solid feed. To wean, reduce the volume of milk so that they are still hungry and will go eat the starter/solid feed. Ways to wean: reduce the size of the meal but don’t change the amount of meals the cow gets. The members also talked about dairy cow judging: mammary system is the highest score, body capacity, and general appearance. To end off the meeting the members got to judgefour jersey cows. They thanked Mr. Nixon for showing them his farm.  Submitted photo
