Skills gold

Centre Wellington District High School’s Jade Ritter, middle, won the workplace safety Skills Canada National Competition which took place from May 21 to June 3 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg. The Grade 10 student took home the gold medal this year after winning a silver medal in last year’s national competition. “Competing in Skills has shown me the importance of skilled trades and technology and the large demand for students to enter these diverse and rewarding fields,” Ritter said. “It has taught me the importance of hard work and dedication, as well as shown me how the two can pay off.” At this year’s national competition Ritter was up against last year’s gold medalist. “The workplace I was required to inspect this year was an agriculture theme and we were required to visit four different competition sites (culinary, car painting, cabinet making and heavy machinery) to fill out information about hazard controls,” she said. “Overall it was a fabulous experience and a great way to highlight the importance and talent of Canada’s youth.”  Submitted photo
