Festival writing contest deadline approaching

ELORA - The Elora Writers’ Festival (EWF) is seeking original short stories from area authors young and old, on any topic, theme or genre, for the 2017 EWF Writing Contest.

To qualify, entries must be postmarked on or before April 10 (no email or faxed entries are accepted).

There are three categories for short fiction. They include:

- youth (age 13 and under) can submit a story of up to 1,000 words; and

- teen (age 14 to 19), has a 2,000-word maximum.

These categories are open to young people who are residents of Wellington, Waterloo, Dufferin, Halton and Hamilton-Wentworth counties/regions, and there is no entry fee.

The third category is the open category, for stories up to 2,000 words. This category is open to all Canadian residents of any age, up to and including adults, and carries a $15 entry fee. Stories submitted in the open category cannot also be submitted to youth or teen categories.

Another category, added this year to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, is personal essays of 1,000 words maximum on  the topic “My Canadian moment.”

It’s open to all age groups, residents of Wellington, Waterloo, Dufferin, Halton and Hamilton-Wentworth counties/regions. Winners will be judged on content and theme and there is no entry fee.

Entries are judged blind, so author details must not appear on the story itself.

On a separate title page, include category, story title, writer’s name, address, email (youth and teen writers may use parent or teacher email for contact information).

Mail entries to: EWF Writing Contest, c/o Elora Arts Council, Box 3084, Elora,  ON, N0B 1S0, postmarked by April 10.

For more information and to see the full contest details visit the festival’s website at elorawritersfestival.blogspot.ca or contact contest chair Francis Baker at EWFwritingcontest@gmail.com.
