Food bank aided by horticultural group

MARDEN - Santa Claus visited members of the Guelph Township Horticultural Society at its annual meeting in November.

In return for gifts, the membership brought food or money to be delivered to an area food bank.

Reports were presented by the various committees of the society on the year’s work. Highlights were a very successful spring plant sale, with excellent displays at the three flower and vegetable shows.

Fifteen youth entered the garden competition. Plans are still afoot for the Enabling Garden to be built behind the Marden library. As well members viewed the proposed plans for the revitalization of Marden Park area.

During the year the club enjoyed excellent speakers and demonstrators as well as their March pot luck and June barbecue, all held at Marden community centre and park.

Monica Skinner, past District 7 director, was present to conduct the installation of the officers and board for 2009 as follows:

President: Jane McDonald; first Vice, Phil Sweet; show secretary,Pat Pritchard; board members Kelly Caldwell, Ruby Thompson, Donna Rowe, Linda Van Norman, Ruth Robinson, and Sylvia Grant. Appointed were: secretary-treasurer, Jean Gordon; assistant, Jean Sweet; and financial examiners Evelyn Cleghorn and Marilyn Gray.

The evening closed with a time of fellowship and refreshments.

The next meeting will be Feb. 17, when the photographic competition results will be shown. Entries are to be into the competition chairman by Dec. 31.
