Council moves towards regular performance appraisals

by Kris Svela

KENILWORTH - A Wellington North councillor has garnered the support of his colleagues in a bid to put in place regular performance appraisals of senior staff.

Councillor Andy Lennox, who brought the matter to the attention of council at its previous meeting, got a clearer procedure in place on Dec. 5.

Lennox wanted council to conduct regular performance reviews of senior staff, including the township’s chief administrative officer (CAO).

The councillor wants council to review the top post together with an outside consultant. The process would then apply to reviews of senior staff.

The process should be “once annually or more frequently when required,” said Lennox.

He has had discussions with potential outside sources that could assist in the process. One outside source could eventually be chosen.

“In order to do this we’d need to appoint someone outside of council,” he said, referring to the possible appointment of a lawyer or human resources expert.

The current process involves council reviewing the CAO and the CAO, in turn, reviewing the work of department heads.

“The reason I’ve included this (new procedure before council) is we’ve been on this council for a year and we’ve done nothing with performance appraisals,” Lennox added.

The councillor did not comment on any specific situation leading to his request to update the performance appraisal procedure.

Council approved moving ahead with the new procedures.
